This was originally posted in June 2011, but since December is the most popular month to propose, we thought we’d lend a helping hand to the potential grooms out there…
A lot of guys struggle with picking out the engagement ring. It can be stressful. While some have no problem walking into Tiffany’s and know exactly what their girlfriends want, others… well, just don’t. And that’s okay. Your safest bet? Trick her into picking it out herself!
At Wedding Republic, we usually talk to couples after they’re engaged, but we thought this story was worth sharing… here’s the inside scoop on how Dave was able to (sneakily) buy the perfect wedding ring for Megan.
He started by recruiting a mutual friend that also happened to work with Megan and devised a plan to ‘trick’ Megan into ring shopping. Her friend made up an elaborate story about fighting with her own fiancé about picking out their wedding rings. She was very convincing. In fact, I think there were tears. It got to the point where Megan felt so bad for her friend that she (of her own volition) offered to go ring shopping after work.
Once they were there, it was easy to get Megan into the spirit of trying on engagement rings. All it took was one carefully timed line… “What kind of ring would you want if you were getting married?”
The friend wrote down the ring name and number, and passed it along to Dave. Done and done!
What happened next? He proposed on top of Machu Picchu. In fact, I’m going to the wedding this weekend. The wedding was, in a word awesome. As soon as we have the photos, we’ll show you the details!
As much as I want to give Dave complete credit for ‘tricking’ Megan into picking out her perfect ring, without a willing and convincing partner in crime, it wouldn’t have been possible. And as you could probably tell, Megan wasn’t expecting the proposal. If you and your fiancee have discussed marriage, and are on the same page, there is probably no need to trick her
